What is “OER”?
OER is why so many of our classes don't require textbooks, its awesome.
Where can we find the remote internships list?
Our academic library's special collections and archives has an SJSU student intern. Its so helpful for us...
The database specifies virtual/onsite
Kristi - check mark the Virtual choice
Would you recommend an internship to explore careers? I'm in public libraries now, but I'm curious about academic librarianship
Kristi if you Google "SJSU iSchool Remote Internships" you'll get here - https://ischool.sjsu.edu/virtual-internships
I am definitely tempted to go the other direction Daniela, I work in an academic library and would love to do an internship in a public library.
Thank you! I am also considering a career transition from public to school or academic libraries and would echo Daniela's question.
@Kris and @Daniela, the Boston Public Library is planning to offer a career transitions series this Spring that is geared towards librarians. I work 15 miles outside of Boston and heard about it a while ago, but don't know anymore yet. Maybe you can look on their website to see if they promoted it yet.
Daniela--we'll discuss your question in a few minutes.
Thank you so much, I am not so much interested in career transitions, I love working in an academic library so much. I just want to experience working in other fields to learn more about other libraries.
Oh, I see. Great idea!
Thank you! This is great info!
Oh no, congrats Debbie!
Congratulations Debbie! We will miss you
Best of luck Debbie! Congratulations on your retirement!
Congrats on your retirement Debbie!
You're welcome, Daniela!
Congrats Debbie! Welcome Bethany!
Welcome to SJSU!
I will miss you Debbie! Thank you for all that you do! Nice to meet you Bethany!
Looking forward to working with you Bethany!
Welcome Bethany! Congrats Professor Faires!!
And welcome Bethany!
I will miss you Debbie and wish you well! I look forward to your guidance and knowledge, Bethany.
Is it possible to complete internships listed without enrolling for the class?
Regarding internships, a student has to have at least 19 units right?
Thanks for asking that great question Elizabeth!
Thank you for asking the question. I'm in public and considering school libraries. Graduating in December. Can I take an internship in my last semester?
I'm wondering if SJSU has future plans of specializing MLIS degrees into specific aspects of librarianship for ex. MLIS in cataloging, MLIS in digital librarianship, MLIS in public librarianship, MLIS in XYZ. Or does the university intend to stay a bit more general MLIS with electives to specialize?
Thank you Dr. Main!
@Bridget, I would add Outreach Services as a specialty.
How can I figure out whether I'm enrolled as a regular student or special session student? Or does it vary each semester? Quite frankly I've forgotten at this point what I've enrolled as in the past.
any recommended electives, or general tips, for those who want to specialize (i.e. archival work) but also want to be comfortable working in public or academic libraries, where there might be more employment opportunities?
Is it possible to get internships outside of the database? What if internships were found on glassdoor or LinkedIn and more technical based?
Great, thank you, Dr. Main!
Thank you so much, I didn't consider an internship since I already work in a library, but now I am tempted to do an internship with another field to broaden my experience.
I am still a bit confused about how advisors work at iSchool. My impression is that we don't have just one advisor. Could you do an overview?
To the best of my knowledge, (which isn’t much since I still feel so new), there are no classes in Outreach. Please correct me if I’m mistaken.
It is a great way to get experience before throwing away a long career in one field! I have worked in public libraries for 25 years and would hate to move into school libraries, and find out I hate it! I'm considering an internship too!
why are there more electives for special session?
Thank you Linda! I am taking a semester break, so this is a good time for me to figure that out!
great, thank you!
Hi Karen, to be fair, outreach is a very broad term in Libraries. I am the head of outreach at a CSU library, and I am in contact with the outreach people in the other CSU's and everyone has many different responsibilities.
What transitions services does SJSU offer to students preparing to graduate or recently graduated?
I did a custom internship for last Fall, it was wonderful! Advice... to get started 3-4 months before to get it certified by SJSU...
That's great advice christina
@Christina, great advice! Thank you!
Thanks Kris. I’m keen on the ABOS and would love to see a class offered taught by working Outreach Services Librarians.
Dr. Main referred to, MLIS Career Pathways Course Intersection link https://ischoolapps.sjsu.edu/pathways/intersection.php
Is Community Partnerships offered every summer?
Hi Karen, its great. You learn a lot. In academic libraries. One of the odd things is that depending on the university, the outreach position is either a staff position or a tenure-tracked faculty position. Mine is a staff job.
Please find the Student Services Team at https://ischool.sjsu.edu/student-services-team
Thank you for answering the outreach question.
@Kris: my path is defi
Thanks for explaining the differences between special session and regular session.
thanks for that explanation dr. main!
Oops definitely public library, not academic.
If you switch to Special Session for a semester (with permission), do you revert back to Regular after that, or is the change "permanent"?
Isn’t special session based on zip code?
I thought that too, Karen.
Yeah, it makes sense. I am regular session in Fall and Spring, and do special session for summer.
OK thank you Dr. Main!
Session information and fee differences can be found at https://ischool.sjsu.edu/ischool-fees
Basing on zip code on the possibility to travel to campus is counterintuitive for a program that is 100% online.
Yes, my old coworkers did that
I think it was in Cal State Fullerton
Thank you. I know Kim, but how do I access the Career Liaison person?
Does anyone have a link handy for the Continuing Student Scholarships?
Taking a special collections class this semester, its great.
Thank you Sheila!
@Karen - https://ischool.sjsu.edu/ischool-current-student-scholarships
Thank you Bethany!
Thank you, Sheila!
Thank you for the links!
Yup, and there are a lot of alumni working in libraries all over the world.
Here’s a crazy question I just thought of: is there such a thing as a traveling librarian?
Great question, Karen! I've wondered if there is a cruise ship librarian, and wanted to be a beach librarian where I set up a small library right on the beach!
Oh, that's great!
Can a graduated student return to take a course or two?
@Kristi, there are pop up beach libraries.
Ha ha ha, you are so funny Dr. Main
Good try...you all are too valuable a resource for us to let you off the hook that easy! So many questions...
My understanding is that Pathway Advisors are different than the advisor that I will be assigned at some point, is that correct?
That's good to know, a way to keep up with the newest trends for librarianship.
Really, Karen?? I would love that!!
@Anglea - you mean your e-port advisor?
What is your favorite thing about being a director/ professor Dr. Main? :)
@Karen, I'm not sure...
@Kristi - I learned about it researching outreach :-)
Here again is that link to Kim Dority’s contact page https://ischool.sjsu.edu/post/ischool-career-consultant-students-and-alumni
That is so amazing! I wonder how I would find out more, any leads or ideas, Karen?
Advisor menu https://ischoolapps.sjsu.edu/advising/pathway.php They are organized by their specialty in LIS
@Kristi, holy cow I’d have to dig through my spreadsheet on outreach…
Can I ask again when Summer Special Session classes are open for registration? Is it March 12th?
That is okay, Karen!
@Kristi something fun to research :-)
Summer registration will open April 12 Please see dates here: https://ischool.sjsu.edu/registration-and-enrollment
WOW!!! That is a cool idea, Karen!
That sounds like fun
Thank you Sheila!
Camel bookmobile so to speak!
For more INFO 200 paper, I learned so much about animal mobile libraries around the world. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS764US764&biw=1506&bih=582&tbm=vid&ei=4i5IYPzGNeO50PEP5-OayAc&q=camel+libraries+ethiopia+youtube+2020&oq=camel+libraries+ethiopia+youtube+2020&gs_l=psy-ab.3...7648.8689.0.9188.8.131.52.0.0.0.122.505.3j2.5.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.4.407...33i160k1j33i299k1.0.R05uzWv8IRo
Thank you so much Dr. Main
thank you Dr. Main!!!!
Thank you, Dr. Main!
Thank you Dr Main!
Thank you. This was a great session.
Thank you so much!! We are asking about working on beaches and cruise ships! Don't feel bad... Don't we all want to enjoy life again?
Great session, thanks everyone!
Thank you this was super helpful!
Thank you Dr. Main!
Thank you Linda! And everyone else!
You've always answered all of my questions so quickly! Thanks again
Thank you everyone!
