What is “OER”?
Karen Quest
53:40
Thanks
Kris Zoleta
54:25
OER is why so many of our classes don't require textbooks, its awesome.
Kristi
55:45
Where can we find the remote internships list?
Kris Zoleta
56:15
Our academic library's special collections and archives has an SJSU student intern. Its so helpful for us...

Daniela Castrillo

Would you recommend an internship to explore careers? I'm in public libraries now, but I'm curious about academic librarianship
Kristi
57:06
Thank you!
Bethany Winslow
57:16
Kristi if you Google "SJSU iSchool Remote Internships" you'll get here - https://ischool.sjsu.edu/virtual-internships
Kris Zoleta
57:52
I am definitely tempted to go the other direction Daniela, I work in an academic library and would love to do an internship in a public library.
Kristi
58:19
Thank you! I am also considering a career transition from public to school or academic libraries and would echo Daniela's question.
Kristi
01:00:29
@Kris and @Daniela, the Boston Public Library is planning to offer a career transitions series this Spring that is geared towards librarians. I work 15 miles outside of Boston and heard about it a while ago, but don't know anymore yet. Maybe you can look on their website to see if they promoted it yet.
Debbie Faires
01:00:50
Daniela--we'll discuss your question in a few minutes.
Kris Zoleta
01:01:37
Thank you so much, I am not so much interested in career transitions, I love working in an academic library so much. I just want to experience working in other fields to learn more about other libraries.
Kristi
01:02:33
Oh, I see. Great idea!
Daniela Castrillo
01:03:05
Thank you! This is great info!
Kris Zoleta
01:03:23
Oh no, congrats Debbie!
Elizabeth Valencia
01:03:24
Congratulations Debbie! We will miss you
Kristi

I will miss you Debbie and wish you well! I look forward to your guidance and knowledge, Bethany.

01:06:17
Is it possible to complete internships listed without enrolling for the class?
Jada Wedlow
01:06:20
Regarding internships, a student has to have at least 19 units right?
Jada Wedlow
01:06:57
Thanks for asking that great question Elizabeth!
Kristi
01:07:01
Thank you for asking the question. I'm in public and considering school libraries. Graduating in December. Can I take an internship in my last semester?
Bridget
01:07:40
I'm wondering if SJSU has future plans of specializing MLIS degrees into specific aspects of librarianship for ex. MLIS in cataloging, MLIS in digital librarianship, MLIS in public librarianship, MLIS in XYZ. Or does the university intend to stay a bit more general MLIS with electives to specialize?
Daniela Castrillo
01:08:10
Thank you Dr. Main!
Karen Quest
01:08:12
@Bridget, I would add Outreach Services as a specialty.
Max Rosen
01:08:49
How can I figure out whether I'm enrolled as a regular student or special session student? Or does it vary each semester? Quite frankly I've forgotten at this point what I've enrolled as in the past.
Taylor Kaplan
01:08:51
any recommended electives, or general tips, for those who want to specialize (i.e. archival work) but also want to be comfortable working in public or academic libraries, where there might be more employment opportunities?
Coleen Umali
01:10:17
Is it possible to get internships outside of the database? What if internships were found on glassdoor or LinkedIn and more technical based?
Kristi
01:13:22
Great, thank you, Dr. Main!
Kris Zoleta
01:13:45
Thank you so much, I didn't consider an internship since I already work in a library, but now I am tempted to do an internship with another field to broaden my experience.
Daniela Castrillo
01:14:08
I am still a bit confused about how advisors work at iSchool. My impression is that we don't have just one advisor. Could you do an overview?
Karen Quest
01:14:44
To the best of my knowledge, (which isn’t much since I still feel so new), there are no classes in Outreach. Please correct me if I’m mistaken.
Kristi
01:15:02
It is a great way to get experience before throwing away a long career in one field! I have worked in public libraries for 25 years and would hate to move into school libraries, and find out I hate it! I'm considering an internship too!
Bridget
01:15:08
thanks
Bridget
01:16:11
why are there more electives for special session?
Max Rosen
01:16:29
Thank you Linda! I am taking a semester break, so this is a good time for me to figure that out!
Taylor Kaplan
01:17:29
great, thank you!
Kris Zoleta
01:17:33
Hi Karen, to be fair, outreach is a very broad term in Libraries. I am the head of outreach at a CSU library, and I am in contact with the outreach people in the other CSU's and everyone has many different responsibilities.
Kristi
01:18:22
What transitions services does SJSU offer to students preparing to graduate or recently graduated?
Christina
01:18:50
I did a custom internship for last Fall, it was wonderful! Advice... to get started 3-4 months before to get it certified by SJSU...
Kris Zoleta
01:19:11
That's great advice christina
Kristi
01:19:13
@Christina, great advice! Thank you!
Karen Quest
01:19:26
Thanks Kris. I’m keen on the ABOS and would love to see a class offered taught by working Outreach Services Librarians.
Taryn Reiner

Dr. Main referred to, MLIS Career Pathways Course Intersection link https://ischoolapps.sjsu.edu/pathways/intersection.php
Daniela Castrillo
01:20:57
Thank you!
Karen Quest
01:22:12
Is Community Partnerships offered every summer?
Kristi
01:22:12
Thanks, Taryn.
Kris Zoleta
01:22:52
Hi Karen, its great. You learn a lot. In academic libraries. One of the odd things is that depending on the university, the outreach position is either a staff position or a tenure-tracked faculty position. Mine is a staff job.
Taryn Reiner
01:23:06
Please find the Student Services Team at https://ischool.sjsu.edu/student-services-team

Kris Zoleta

Thanks for explaining the differences between special session and regular session.
Bridget
01:24:39
thanks for that explanation dr. main!
Karen Quest
01:24:43
Oops definitely public library, not academic.
Angela Brindle
01:24:48
If you switch to Special Session for a semester (with permission), do you revert back to Regular after that, or is the change "permanent"?
Karen Quest
01:25:23
Isn’t special session based on zip code?
Kristi
01:25:37
I thought that too, Karen.
Kris Zoleta
01:26:04
Yeah, it makes sense. I am regular session in Fall and Spring, and do special session for summer.
Angela Brindle
01:26:10
OK thank you Dr. Main!
Taryn Reiner
01:26:14
Session information and fee differences can be found at https://ischool.sjsu.edu/ischool-fees
Karen Quest
01:27:43
Basing on zip code on the possibility to travel to campus is counterintuitive for a program that is 100% online.
Kris Zoleta
01:27:47
Yes, my old coworkers did that
Kris Zoleta
01:27:56
I think it was in Cal State Fullerton
Kristi
01:30:42
Thank you. I know Kim, but how do I access the Career Liaison person?

Kris Zoleta
01:35:54
Yup, and there are a lot of alumni working in libraries all over the world.
Karen Quest
01:37:03
Here’s a crazy question I just thought of: is there such a thing as a traveling librarian?
Kristi
01:38:12
Great question, Karen! I've wondered if there is a cruise ship librarian, and wanted to be a beach librarian where I set up a small library right on the beach!
Kris Zoleta
01:39:09
Oh, that's great!
Kristi
01:40:12
Can a graduated student return to take a course or two?
Karen Quest
01:40:28
@Kristi, there are pop up beach libraries.
Kris Zoleta
01:40:29
Ha ha ha, you are so funny Dr. Main
Kristi
01:41:25
Good try...you all are too valuable a resource for us to let you off the hook that easy! So many questions...
Angela Brindle
01:41:49
My understanding is that Pathway Advisors are different than the advisor that I will be assigned at some point, is that correct?
Kris Zoleta
01:42:27
That's good to know, a way to keep up with the newest trends for librarianship.
Kristi
01:43:02
Really, Karen?? I would love that!!
Karen Quest
01:43:06
@Anglea - you mean your e-port advisor?
Daniela Castrillo
01:43:22
What is your favorite thing about being a director/ professor Dr. Main? :)
Angela Brindle

@Karen, I'm not sure...
