My first question is: I am a full-time student. How soon in my degree program can I begin to apply for jobs?
Christopher Buser
16:52
Question: You said you were setting this to record. Will this telechat be available to download later this month?
Chelsea Grant
17:16
Hi! I am currently interning at a library and was told by my branch manager to apply for the upcoming library job. When I applied, I was told by the city that I didn't have enough experience "paraprofessional" - so does this mean we always have to start out in an assistant or page position?
Kathy Richers
17:58
that's a serious problem
Matt
18:20
Question: If I hold multiple degrees should I limit or tailor resumes to only include what education might apply?
Michelle Compo
18:49
As a soon to be graduate who has yet to gain experience in the field of library science, is it better to go for a full librarian position or would it be better to go for a position better suited to gain experience?
Amanda Fairchild, FGS Blog Editor
19:04
Question: What about presentation skills and soft skills, are there some ways that you know are effective to learn these skills better without just throwing yourself out there into a grand presentation?
Christopher Buser
20:08
Excellent. Thank you.
Kathy Richers
20:40
where will you post the recording, and do we still use objectives in resumes?
Camila Dodik
21:07
Is it more advantageous to have work experience in something like a page job vs. internship or volunteer experience? I don’t have enough time for both
Alyssa Key
21:45
I did that for a library aide position, but they did not substitute my schooling for experience. Does that happen a lot?
Jennifer Pesek
22:33
I'm an older student and I've read the general info on the LIS field being open to older workers, but I have some choices to make about my career pathway and I'd like to take info account if there are any different pathways that are more or less open to older workers, or if some particular positions are better or worse. I understand this might be sort of "insider info" or anecdotal, but if you have any general advice I'd love to hear.
Michelle Compo
26:04
perfect, thank you!
Amanda Fairchild, FGS Blog Editor
30:09
thank you for answering my question! (And FGS stands for First Generation Student, Group). Another question is: What about those putting different proficiencies, like Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. on my resume? Is it assumed that I'd have the skills to use these basic programs?
Traci Joy
30:16
I currently live in New Hampshire, but will be looking for jobs in northern California when I am close to finishing / or when I am finished with my MLIS. Some hiring managers want to meet in person… how to get around this when applying across this country?
Michelle Compo
30:26
Q: How long in advance should we ask, say a professor, for a reference letter for a position? Also, how long should we wait before doing a follow-up call about a position already applied for?
Kathy Richers
30:55
Thank you
Miguel Loeza
31:56
what’s the best structure for a resume?
Camila Dodik
31:59
Similar to the question about previous educational experience, should you leave less relevant work experience out of your resume?
Samantha Cayo
33:11
This was one of the questions you mentioned in the email about this session, but I was curious about the number of pages for the resume and also whether all the pages of your resume should always be full. For example, would 1 1/2 pages ever be appropriate or does that appear messy?
Alyssa Key
33:42
I can understand that. Thank you! :)
Elizabeth Borges
33:57
Is there a time of the year when positions in academic libraries tend to be posted? For example, I know that K-12 schools post in the spring and that March is a big month for postings. Also, do positions in academic libraries tend to start at the beginning of the school year or can they start year-round?
Julie Arnold
36:54
What can I do if I’m being turned down from jobs for being ‘overqualified’ but I’m underqualified for Librarian I, II, etc.?
Jennifer Pesek
39:11
Thank you so much for answering question in so much depth! It was very helpful. I am 49, so some of my good experience is further back than 15 years. But I'll run a resume by you separately for nit picky questions. Thank you!
Traci Joy
39:19
Ok! Thank you -
Kathy Richers
39:30
I'd like to send you a resume too
Traci Joy
44:03
Yes, are you available to review resume and cover letters and give a little bit of feedback?
Holly
47:50
Do you have any advice for contacting organizations for potential internships (rather than applying for already listed internships)?
Cecilia McCarthy
49:07
I'm very shy, and I have a hard time with interviews. I tend to underplay my strengths because it feels like bragging, and I know this harms my job chances. Do you know any techniques that could help with this?
Michelle Compo
49:34
Does the career center help with resume writing other than just the online help, i.e. one-on-one help?
Samantha Cayo
49:40
that was helpful - thanks!
Elizabeth Borges
51:34
Great, thank you so much!
Julie Arnold
52:05
Nope, was just the application!
Traci Joy
53:00
I’ve been turned down for positions for being overqualified, too.
Julie Arnold
53:14
Thanks
Traci Joy
54:58
thank you - what’s your email to send you my word docs? (resume)
Traci Joy
58:38
Oh! Quick Q about linkedIn… I am not on social media or linkedIn. Does NOT being on LinkedIn hurt my chances or opportunities for employers? So far, I have gotten three jobs not being on it… but I will be applying to jobs across country by next year, so it might be helpful? (I do have a website…)
Cecilia McCarthy
58:39
Thank you
Michelle Compo
01:00:08
yes, thank you!
Jennifer Pesek
01:02:14
One other question. I'd like to get started on job experience before I hit my 19 units for the academic internships. I already found one internship I'm going to apply for on SJSU handshake. Do you have any recommendations for any other sites that might include internships? Like does Monster or any of the other commercial sites have internship listings ?
Traci Joy
01:03:16
I have had online stalkers… plus I am somewhat of a luddite. I know I am a walking juxtopisition…
Kathy Richers
01:03:58
traci, I've been there too
Amanda Fairchild, FGS Blog Editor
01:05:56
What about internships outside of CA?
Alyssa Key
01:06:10
Are there a lot of remote internships available usually?
Elisha Robinson
01:06:25
Such great info! Is this zoom session available as a recording later?
Violet McCrigler
01:06:26
Do we still have access to Big Interview? It was super helpful in getting me my last position.
Camila Dodik
01:07:55
Thank you, this has been so helpful!
Traci Joy

I had an online initial interview at a university here in NH and it was scary. It was recorded. Not live with people!!!

Can you talk more about remote internships please?
Julie Arnold
01:10:14
