Patricia Albers: Joan Mitchell, Painter
“Music, poems, landscape, and dogs make me want to paint,” said Joan Mitchell. “And painting is what allows me to survive.” On the occasion of the Joan Mitchell retrospective on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Patricia Albers will present the work of this artist whose vision was always uniquely her own. When Mitchell began her career in the 1950s, it was widely believed that women were incapable of great painting. Today she is recognized as one of the artistic giants of the twentieth century. Patricia Albers is the author of Joan Mitchell, Lady Painter: A Life, the first biography of the abstract painter Joan Mitchell.

An acclaimed weekly lecture series brings in artists, designers, and critical theorists from around the world, broadening the students’ experiential base and complementing local offerings. All lectures and exhibitions are open to the general public free of charge.
